Double indemnity: the enchanted isle. [James M Cain] -- An empty love destroys everything it touches in Double Indemnity. The Enchanted Isle centers around a desperate runaway teenager who becomes involved in a deadly bank robbery.

Enchanted Isle may be one of the worst of Cain's late in life efforts. In fairness, it should be noted that Enchanted Isle was only published ineight years after Cain's death. So it could be that Cain himself realized the book wasn't ready for prime time.

Enchanted Isle is narrated by Mandy Vernick, a 16 year old resident of Hyattsville, MD/5(8). The Enchanted Isle book. Read 8 reviews from the world's largest community for readers.

While searching for her father, a runaway stumbles into a deadly /5. Resonant of the footloose Jazz Age, it made persistent headlines and led to a sensational trial. The crime spawned a s Broadway play and inspired the classic noir film of the s, Double Indemnity. This book assesses the entire case, from grisly slaying and shabby cover-up.

This is where readers get to meet Cora and Frank, the iconic couple, for the first time. This is the book that influenced as well as inspired crime writers for a generation. The book was met with a bit of criticism and concern when it first was published.

Another posthumous-publication mistake: if Cloud Nine () was an unpleasant, implausible curiosity, this second retrieval from Cain's apparent dotage (he died inat 85) is sheer embarrassment all around. The narrator here is year-old Mandy, who tells her melodramatic story&#;seemingly set in the s&#;in an unintentionally hilarious mishmash of pre-WW II, Runyonesque.

Words7 Pages In Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity (dir. Billy Wilder, ), character Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) becomes enchanted by the seductive Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck). However, through an act of lust, Neff gets involved in a murderous scheme with Dietrichson.

Smooth-talking insurance salesman Walter Neff meets attractive Phyllis Dietrichson when he calls to renew her husband's automobile policy. The couple are immediately drawn to each other and an affair begins. They cook up a scheme to murder Mr. Dietrichson for life insurance money with a double indemnity clause.

There is no doubt in Double Indemnity, that Phyllis Dietrichson, the dissatisfied wife of a wealthy older man is being sexually objectified both by the imagery of the film and by her position in relation to the other characters.

She is a beautiful and alluring woman, barely older than Lola, her husband’s daughter from a previous marriage. Find many great new & used options and get the best deals for The Postman Always Rings Twice & Double Indemnity FRANKLIN MYSTERY James M Cain at the best online prices at eBay.

James M. Cain, virtuoso of the roman noir, gives us a tautly narrated and excruciatingly suspenseful story in Double Indemnity, an X-ray view of guilt, of duplicity, and of the kind of obsessive, loveless love that devastates everything it touches.
